ABLS and Educational Opportunities

The North Carolina Burn Surge Disaster Program will offer a variety of burn care related educational opportunities for 2011-2012. Please view the course descriptions below.

Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) Provider Course
Advanced Burn Life Support is an eight-hour course for physicians, nurses, paramedics, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, EMT Intermediates and therapists. The course provides guidlines in the assessment and management of the burn patient during the first 24 hours post injury. Advanced Burn Life Support (ABLS) Instructor Course
The Advanced Burn Life Support Instructor Course is a six-hour course designed for those physicians, nurses, nurse practiitioners, and physician assistants who have experience in daily patient management of burn injuries. Advanced Burn Life Support for the Experienced Provider(also known as ABLS Now)
The ABLS Now© online learning program provides lecture presentations, as well as case studies. Self-study questions with links to the supporting material in the Provider Manual support the learning process. The learner will complete and submit a course examination at the conclusion of the course. The cost to attend this course is $65. For additional information, please click here.

Burn Care for the Rural Provider
The Rural Burn Care course is a 3 hour (2.5 contact hours) with CEU and CME credit. Course content will focus on the first six hours of patient care for a burn patient outside a typical Trauma Center/Burn Center setting. This focus includes the local EMS to the community hospital. Burn Care for the Experienced Provider
The Burn Care for the Experienced Provider course is a day long course (6.75 contact hours) developed by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center, along with Wake Forest University. Topics include discussion of the NC Burn Plan, Care of Multiple Burn Patients, and Care of the Burn Patient. For additional information, please click here.

North Carolina Blast Injury Education Program
Response to an event involving an explosion requires a unique knowledge and skills set to manage effectively and efficiently. The safety concerns, injury patterns, triage and treatment characteristics and the high profile nature of these events requires the responder to be thoroughly prepared. This program is designed to educate the emergency responder in the assessment, initial management, triage, and transport of patient(s) who are involved in a blast event. EMS Administration and Medical Disaster Management (EMSAdmMDM) Certificate Program
The EMS Administration and Medial Disaster Management (EMSAdmMDM) Certificate Program, based at the University of North Carolina in the School of Medicine, is a continuing education program with continuing education units offered for those who successfully complete the program. The focus and intent is to address more of the complex processes associated with administrative, executive, and operational leaders within the profession of Emergency Services. Hospital/Healthcare Emergency Disaster Planning and Preparedness (H2EDP2) Certificate Program
The Hospital/Healthcare Emergency Disaster Planning and Preparedness (H2EDP2) program is a 2 level (20 contact hours per level) certificate program based at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. This program has been developed to address the need for more individuals with skills focused on adressing emergency management for hospitals and healthcare systems before, during, and after disasters.
